Mankind’s Illusion

“You are not an isolated entity. You are a unique, irreplaceable part of the cosmos. Don’t forget this. You are an essential piece of the puzzle of humanity.” -Epictetus

Mankind’s Illusion

(Rambling thoughts on societal expectations of conformity vs people’s innate desires for freedom)

I feel no connection in the city. I see the trees struggling for air and space in the never-ending concrete jungle. How could we let ourselves get this detached from anything remotely real? I smile at the passing faces and one out of a hundred looks back. The fluorescent lights have blinded people from reaching outside of themselves. All they can see is their own reflection among the blurry skyline of greed and sorrow. I walk amongst the crowds and there is no peace. Every person has the presence of a shell, they are empty. All that remains is the chaotic ramblings of the mind driving them further into madness. This is not life; there is no natural beauty left. The mystical landscape of the Earth has been replaced with man’s egoistic notions of “progress.” The city is an experiment gone horribly wrong, yet somehow it remains strong enough to keep the masses blinded. Instead of searching for a deeper purpose we’ve let society tell us what life to live. Instead of listening to our hearts, we let our ego run rampant, infecting the globe like a plague. One day the Earth will give us her response. That day people will be freed from the shackles of their tyrannical culture and finally the will be happy. Only when we let the illusions fall away, will we ever know true peace.
